Beim Baden ertrinkt ein Junge. Aus Angst um ihre Zukunftsaussichten beschließen seine für den Unfall verantwortlichen Freunde, über die wahre Todesursache stillschweigen zu bewahren. Zehn Jahre später wird die angehende Journalistin Katherine in ihr Heimatdorf geschickt, um vom dortigen Mothman-Festival zu berichten. Ihre ehemaligen Freunde sind immer noch traumatisiert von den Ereignissen damals und begegnen ihr mit Ausnahme ihres Ex-Freundes Derek mit Skepsis. Dann taucht der Mottenmann auf und beginnt seine blutige Arbeit.
